Washington DC Trip

We did it! We didn't know it before hand but I think we came the best week of the year. The temperature was good and there were NO crowds or traffic...at all. Our cab driver said after Labor Day it would be busy again. Bringing just our oldest was great. The time was personal and we were able to do and see so much more. Plus we could easily fit in a cab at any corner. Cabs aren't very expensive for the Capital area. Almost everything is FREE, I had no idea. The ONLY thing we paid for was the night time Memorial tour,  Mt Vernon, and Spy Museum. You also have to buy tickets ahead of time for the adult portion of the Holocaust Museum. We drove to Mt Vernon and the Zoo, super easy to get there and park. Smartest thing we did was packed our running shoes and making memories  with our high schooler, priceless!

The Office of President for Kindergarten

This week we are studying the US Presidents. Day 1 we read So you wanna be President?   by Judith ST George and David Small. We talked about the white house, and played a guessing game where Dottie tried to guess where the nation's capital is, and placed white house die cut on that spot. We looked at Presidential cards and talked about Mt. Rushmore. No..... Nooooo! Look for the National Capital Symbol Great Job!

Day 3 American Symbols for Kindergarten

To conclude our week being patriotic and all, we learned about the Liberty Bell by reading Saving the Liberty Bell by Megan Macdonald. We then completed our Eagle sight seeing booklet and sorted silly bands that included the symbols we have studied this week. Do you know how it got cracked? Silly bands for everything, I tell ya!

Elephant or Donkey? ...that is the question

Along with our study of American symbols in Kindergarten this week we have discussed voting. Dottie colored Republican and Democrat pages and made donkey and elephant cinnamon crisps. We graphed out  the vote and it turns out the elephants won in our kitchen! Dottie asked if the people at the voting place would be dressed up as donkeys or elephants.... I said no, I hoped not, maybe I explained it too much like teams and mascots. Anyway she said, "Momma picked her team because they share the same ideas." So at least she got that much. She then went with me to vote on Tuesday but as you know No cameras allowed inside! c

American Symbols for Kindergarten Day 2

Next our sight seeing eagle saw the statue of liberty. We read the book Liberty by Lynn Curlee . We also talked about immigrants and Ellis Island. This brought up the discussion of freedom. Dottie was shocked to hear about the lack of freedom in other countries. She concluded by saying, " freedom is about choices Mom". - Oh boy. We made a page in our book about lady liberty and made our own torch. In math we completed a Statue of Liberty worksheet that told us she stands 306 feet tall! You go girl! Eagle sees Lady Liberty Torch Project The new Lady Liberty This should be the new pose, don't you think? Adding up how tall she is!

American Symbols for Kindergarten Day 1

This week in Social Studies we are studying America's symbols which coincides nicely with election day and our science unit on birds. Day 1 we learned about the stars and stripes, our flag. Dottie counted the stars and each color of stripes. We talked about what they represent and said the pledge of allegiance- which she ended in "so that I may not sin against God." (maybe a little confused with the pledge to the Bible, thanks vbs and awana)Cracked me up anyway :)....Dottie made a replica flag and stamped fifty stars into place. (I put tiny dots where she was to stamp. I learned this lesson the hard way when I taught Duke's kindergarten class and there was alot of confusion counting and recounting.) She found and colored our state on a map of fifty states. She also made a bald eagle and started on a book, where a bald eagle is sight seeing across America and sees the patriotic symbols. We also studied voting and elections because Tuesday is election day! Fifty Star...
