Bee Communication

Did you know bees communicate by smells and dancing? Put a few drops of essential oil on two cotton pads. Repeat with several different oils. Give one of each pair to the student and place the other of the pairs at different locations around the room. Have the students match the pairs using only their sense of smell.  Lesson 6 Arthropods G&B Science

Entomology: Ants and Bees

Ants and bees were our subjects this week as we took a deeper look into the lives of insects. For ants we read several books and did an ant's eye view puzzle that showed us how ants see with compound eyes. We also watched the movie Ant Bully just for fun! Ant's Eye View Puzzle For bees we watched the series The Cat in the Hat knows a lot about that: Making Honey, we also read many bee books, made a bee hive with hexagons and a poem, and completed a life cycle worksheet. We tried to fill the week with as many buzzy things as we could think of  honey buns, bit o honey candy, and The Hermie Movie : Buzby to name a few . Honey Combs are made of hexagons Finger paint the hive Trace the hexagons Here is the beehive but where are the bees Hiding away where nobody sees Watch them come creeping out of their hive...1,2,3,4,5.
