More poultry project

In just six short weeks these little chickens turned into giants. The process was really strange...because they are breed to grow extremely fast and grow huge breasts....their feathers were barely in by show date. So they went through a really awkward disgusting pink fleshy stage. Anyway they were washed up for show day and Duke had to have 4H friends to help him hold the birds. He didn't win, but this Momma thinks he should have. He fed them every few hours, monitored their temperatures,  kept their pin free of poop (which meant hauling heavy buckets of sand and poo in and out) and kept a daily journal of their changes all in the coldest 6 weeks of winter. I don't think we will do this project again, but he did learn a big lesson in good ole hard work!

Look what just came in..... 9 weeks until show time!!!!

Matching and Hatching

We are finishing up on our bird study with matching and hatching. This has been easy with the chickens around. We started with an incubator and basically put eggs in it all summer. One thing we definitely learned was don't count your chickens before they hatch. As much as you want to help them escape the egg the more you interfere the less likely they are to survive. God equipped them with every thing they need to come into this world. After the summer of it we have doubled our flock.... and have loved every minute with the fluffy cute peeping chicks.
