Give a Hoot about Wingspans!

To conclude this week's study of birds we couldn't forget about our good friend Owl. We read Incredible Owls by Justin Martin. We then researched, measured, and charted wing spans of common owls and ourselves. I confirmed that I have the longest arms around. Good grief! What is wingspan? First we taped our tape measure to the floor. Then created a graph with owl names to the left. Next we taped yarn next to the name even with 0". We researched the wingspan and Dottie measured and cut the yarn to length. We then compared and contrasted the information. Next it was our turn! Mom's measured 68" that is 8 inches longer than the Great Horned Owl. Off the chart you might say! Dottie's measured at 43"!

Bird Watching Sight Words for Kindergarten

Since we are studying birds in science this week we decided to go on a sight word bird watch. I placed bird words all over the living room and kitchen , and Dottie spotted them and read them with her binoculars.
